Anal Glands
Anal glands are two small glands or sacs located on either side of a dog's anus. The purpose of the anal glands is known to be the application of pheromone-rich secretion to the outside of the poo in order to mark territory, and a way for dogs to communicate with each other. This is why your dog will take great delight in smelling other dog faeces or bums, it's because they are taking in the scent and finding out about the other dog.
When your cockapoo passes a normal healthy poo, slight pressure is placed on the anal glands which results in a small secretion being secreted onto your dogs poo. This is the normal procedure and how your dog naturally empties it's glands unaided.
However if the poo is too soft, not enough pressure occurs and their anal sacs will not be emptied which can lead to them having a build up. If this continues a build up can cause impacted anal glands.
Other anal gland problems include abscesses and tumours.
You tend to know if there may be an issue with the glands if you notice a foul smell coming from your dogs behind which is often said to be "fishy" or if your dog scoots it's bum across the floor. Some dogs may also bite themselves around their legs and behind or become itchy and irritated.
However whilst it may be necessary to see a vet or a groomer to have the anal glands manually emptied, diet plays a huge part and often a change in diet prevents further issues, and prevents your dog from having to have ongoing emptying of the glands.
