Fudge by Owner Jenny White
My story started one sunny afternoon at a party in our last village. There were approximately 80 people there and most had their eyes on a small, robust puppy tearing around the garden with the children in hot pursuit. He was adorable and he belonged to my next door neighbour Mrs X .Everyone, including us, had fallen in love with this boisterous ball of fluff who we later knew as ‘Fudge’.
I began talking to Mr X who was recovering from major surgery due to a recent stroke at 49. He and his wife were moving to Germany for 2 years where she was taking up a very well paid job. He planned to take early retirement at 50 and look after the puppy. They had an apartment lined up and she was due to start her job in 3 weeks time, Fudge had his passport and, unbeknown to him was going with them. Sadly Mr X told me that due to his stroke he now had tunnel vision and felt it unlikely he would be able to cope with Fudge and that he may have to be re homed. I had to hide my excitement as I felt so sorry for him, but a little light went on inside me and I found myself telling him to let me know if this should this happen . I did not expect to hear from them as our relationship had been ‘strained’ recently and I thought I would be the last person Mrs X would contact.
Meanwhile, Roger and I had vowed, like many, to never have another dog as we were devoted to our last Cocker Spaniel ‘Tetley’. He died unexpectedly aged 12 and we miss him every day ... I could not talk about him for 3 years without crying and despite having a very active social life he left a big void in our lives.
2 weeks passed and I got an phone message from Mrs X asking if we could care for Fudge for one afternoon, followed by an overnight stay the next week . If all went well would we then consider keeping him- I was soooo very excited!!
It was their first dog and I never did have them down as dog lovers but I was wrong - I cried when I saw how devastating this was for them. Fudge had endeared himself to them and they were extremely sad to part with him.
Both initial ‘stays’ went really well and the rest is history. Our ‘adorable little man’ moved in with us on the 15 January 2012 and we have enjoyed him ever since. He is a dog with ‘attitude’ and constantly makes us laugh, he gives us cuddles, he forces us to exercise and he generally rules the roost!!! We have made new friends and enjoyed meeting all the Cockapoo members of the Cockapoo Owners Club and we look forward to travelling to new areas for the Cockapoo walks.
As for Mr & Mrs X, they have been to our new house to visit Fudge when they returned to the UK and we have all spent a very happy time together in the garden. We Skype on a regular basis and I update their Facebook with photos and stories, I am sure they feel that Fudge landed on his ‘paws’ coming to us – we certainly do!! Our gain was certainly their loss, but I will make sure that he is always part of their lives for as long as they want....
We have not only become the owners of an adorable Cockapoo “Fudge’ - but we have also re kindled a seven year friendship with our neighbours!!
Thank you Fudge (alias Ginger Whinger).
