Cockapoos are fantastic dogs, they are friendly and fun and can make an ideal family pet. This wonderful cross breed has been growing in popularity for some time and unfortunately with this has resulted in them often being bred by unscrupulous breeders who do not have the dog’s welfare at heart but are just in it for the money.
Unlike the Kennel Club and Breed clubs that people looking for pure breeds can go to, there isn't anything out there for Cockapoos in this country that is regulated by an approved official organisation. There was a need for information to be out there to the public and this is where the Cockapoo Owners UK Club stepped in. The club was launched in 2011, being one of the first UK clubs, to provide help, support and information on all things relating to cockapoo ownership for both owners and people interested in owning one.
Why don't you recommend breeders?
At the start we wanted to be an owners club not a breeders club and wanted to remain impartial in this area. We decided it was better to give information for members to make their own assessment of a breeder with our guidance ( see our Finding the right breeder article) as we believe that recommendations are personal and what one expects/wants in a breeder another may not. Breeders can also be good at start but may have changed their ethics or vice-versa so would mean constant evaluation, something we felt unable to provide.
We also feel that for us as a club to be able to recommend it would mean independent visits to a breeder to ascertain if they met our preferred breeder standards, done at regular intervals. Again something we feel would be best left to an independent body to carry out, who had no vested interest and who could be totally impartial, something we felt with having breeder club members and friends we could not, we felt it would not be appropriate for us to vet breeders who were club members or friends as we feel total impartially in this area is paramount. Additionally, leaving them out would have been biased, so we decided that for this club we would not go down the recommendation path.
We have a recommendation of breeder, what would you advise?
If a breeder is recommended to you, it is a great starting place, but we always advise that you carry out your own checks on top,and ensure they meet your requirements and that you are happy to purchase a puppy from them.
We recommend that our members only choose breeders who carry out appropriate health tests on bitches and studs and who prioritise the welfare of their breeding dogs above commercial gain.
