Before considering a litter a responsible breeder will look at the hereditary illnesses that the Poodle and the Cocker Spaniel are susceptible to and will test their dogs to ensure that they cannot be passed on to the puppies. See our Health Tests page.
It is now known that certain dog breeds are prone or disposed to certain health conditions and there are recommended health tests and screening for each breed.
Therefore when considering a Cockapoo especially those looking to breed, it is advisable to check the health tests for each of the parent breeds: English Cocker Spaniel, American Cocker Spaniel and Poodles (Toy, Mini and Standard).
At present most Cockapoo breeders are testing the poodles for GPRA ( prcd-PRA) a degenerative eye condition, although we would like to see more health testing done, including yearly eye tests under the BVA scheme. Breeders should be screening their dogs for recommended health tests prior to breeding.
Some of the conditions are caused by recessive genes and therefore a dog would need to inherit two faulty genes i.e. one from each parent to become affected.
If a dog inherits one faulty gene then it will be a carrier meaning it will be at a vey low risk of developing the condition but can pass on the faulty gene to its offspring. Two normal genes results in the dog's status for the condition will be shown as clear/normal.
We would like to see dogs with affected results not to be bred from and those who have carrier status for the breeder to inform the buyer in case they are thinking of breeding. If you wish to breed your Cockapoo it is important that you conduct your own tests if they have not been done or your dog has carrier status. A dog who is a carrier needs to be mated with a dog that is clear/normal.
If the parents of your Cockpoo are KC registered and have had health tests then some of them are sent to the KC and recorded on their database. You would need to know the Pedigree name of the dog or registration number to be able to use this online function. You do this by entering the details onto the Kennel Clubs Mate Select Health test results finder. It will then display any screening results received and recorded from the BVA/KC health schemes or from Official DNA testing schemes like Optigen. Some tests are not recorded on the site although the owners should have documentation and results of any test carried out.

Cockapoos can also be registered on the KC Activity Register which is open to all dogs. It provides access to a number of benefits such as advice on dog health, welfare and training with access to a range of different events and activities licensed by the KC.
